FAQs D| Preparing the Application via the International Student Statute

Students who are not nationals of a European Union country must apply for a student visa to attend courses lasting more than one year. 

To find out where you can apply for a student visa, you should contact the Portuguese embassy/consulate in your country. 

The rule states that you cannot change the type of visa you enter Portugal with, nor is it possible to apply for a new one. 

The knowledge level of the language of teaching will be checked. When necessary, this may be done by means of documentary evidence (B2 level Portuguese language certificate or equivalent) or a written exam or an interview. 

The application process is exclusively online for all programmes at the headquarters of Católica. For most programmes, apply here. 

Applications for the integrated master's programme in Medicine should be submitted here and for the international degrees at the Católica Lisbon School of Business and Economics, here.

Yes, if you are accepted, you will have more time to arrange your visa and move to Portugal. 

You can only apply once you know your exam grades. 

No. You should consult the website of each Faculty. The application fee is due per Faculty and is valid for a maximum of 4 programmes. If you are applying for programmes in different Faculties, you will have to pay an application fee per Faculty. The application fee is non-refundable.

• Passport; 
• Tax identification document; 
• Photograph (passport size); 
• Declaration of honour that the applicant is eligible as an "international student";
• Secondary school diploma; 
• Secondary school transcript, with the subjects listed and the respective grades; 
• Document proving the marks obtained in the final national exam (if available in the country of origin) of secondary education;  
• Statement issued by the secondary school attended, confirming that the applicant's qualifications give access to higher education in the country of origin, and with information on the grading scale used and the respective passing grade for approval, in case this information is not available in the qualification certificate. 
• Eventually, information on the foreign education system to which the qualification relates (e.g. number of years of schooling, entry conditions, school certification). 

Yes, when the documents to be presented have been issued in another country (outside Portugal), they must be legalised/authenticated, depending on the country, at: 

• Portuguese embassies or consular services in the foreign country related to the qualifications;  
• embassies or consular services of foreign countries (where the qualifications were obtained) in Portugal (check with them beforehand if this option is available);  
• the country of origin, for countries that have joined the Hague Convention of 5 October 1961, ratified by Decree-Law no. 48450, published in Diário do Governo, 1st series, no. 148, of 24 June 1968.  
• countries where there is no Portuguese diplomatic representation or which have not adhered to the Apostille of the Hague Convention, legalisation/authentication will be carried out, depending on the case, by the official entity of the country of origin competent for this purpose (e.g. Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Justice). 
• If the documents to be submitted are written in a foreign language, they must be translated into Portuguese in accordance with notarial law.
